What To Pack For Cancun

One of the benefits of traveling to Cancun is the climate, which is warm enough throughout the year for beach-going and outside recreation. The average temperature in the summer months ranges from 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit, with 330 days a year with temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainfall varies year round, with the driest months being March and April. Keep in mind that hurricane season officially runs from June 1-November 30, so be prepared for your travel plans to be disrupted during these months.

When packing your clothes, think about your planned activities. Shorts and short-sleeved shirts are appropriate for going to the beach, shopping, sightseeing and outdoor recreation, but you should also take dressier clothes for dining out in some of the area’s nicer restaurants. Bring your bathing suit and shoes to wear at the beach, along with sunblock and lotion with aloe, in case of sunburn. It is also important to pack insect repellant with DEET to avoid mosquito and other insect bites, since malaria is present in Mexico and Central America. The weather in Cancun can be quite hot during the summer months, so you should include light, loose fitting clothing that will not trap heat near your body. Include a hat and sunglasses to shield your eyes on the beach or in the city.

If you are flying, pack a spare toothbrush, some money and a change of clothes in your carry-on bag, in case your luggage is lost. Do not pack all your money, credit cards and traveler’s checks in one bag, to prevent losing everything if your luggage is misplaced or stolen. A passport is not required for entry into Mexico, but you will need a picture ID and an original copy of your birth certificate, or some other proof of citizenship. When packing, make sure your identification or passport and plane ticket are readily available, because you will have to show them several times before you board the plane in the U.S. Pack a copy of your passport and traveler’s checks receipt in a separate bag, in case they are lost or stolen.

Include your phone, camera, and extra memory cards and rechargeable batteries and a battery charger for your digital camera, so you will be able to share your adventures once you return or post them to social media while you’re there.
