Cancun Beaches and Attractions

Cancun, one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It is also provides visitors a great opportunity to see what nature in Mexico has to offer. However, it has not been around very long. Cancun was built, from the sand up, by developers in the 1970s to draw people to Quintana Roo, a part of Mexico that wasn't officially recognized as a state until 1974. The island is 16 miles long and is divided into El Centro, the downtown area, and the Hotel Zone, which is the major tourist area. Through its short lifespan, Cancun has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico, not only because of the beaches, nightlife, hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions, but also because of its ties to Mexican history.

Cancun’s White Sand Beaches

If you’re going to Cancun purely for recreation and relaxation on the beach, Cancun’s white beaches and clear waters make it a great place to relax and play. The climate is mild all year, with 330 days above 80 degrees Fahrenheit and average summer temperatures ranging from 80-85 degrees. Rainfall amounts vary throughout the year, with the driest months being March and April. Remember that the Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June 1-November 30 each year, so be prepared for your travel plans to be disrupted or postponed during that time.

Cancun’s Local Attractions

Although Cancun itself is only about 30 years old, it is situated in close proximity to some of the most famous Mayan ruins in Mexico and offers a great opportunity to take day trips to these ruins. Cancun’s state, Quintana Roo, is home to two major Mayan ruins, Tulum and Chichen Itza, and many other lesser Mayan sites. It is also home to wild- and sea-life that is worth seeing.

Cancun is also home to many theaters, museums and other cultural experiences. You can also see a bullfight, get a guided tour of the city and take Spanish classes. These offer a good opportunity to learn more about the day-to-day life in Cancun, which is home to more than 300,000 people year round.
